Cleaning your air con regularly
Step-by-step guide to clean your air con unit

Cleaning your air conditioner (AC) unit is essential for maintaining its efficiency and air quality. Regular maintenance can increase the lifespan of your unit, decrease energy consumption and save you money on unnecessary repairs.
Before you begin, make sure to turn off the power to your AC unit to ensure your safety.
1. Gather the essential tools:
- Screwdriver
- Vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment
- Fin comb or fin straightener
- Water and mild detergent or AC coil cleaner
- Water hose (if possible)
- A spray bottle
- Soft bristle brush or old toothbrush
- Safety goggles and gloves
2. Remove the access panel:
- Typically, the access panel is located on the exterior of the AC unit. Use a screwdriver to remove it, exposing the internal components.
3. Clean or replace the filter:
- The air filter is usually located behind the access panel. Depending on your AC unit, you may need to replace or clean the filter. If it's washable, rinse it with water and mild detergent, then let it dry completely before reinserting it. If it's disposable, replace it with a new one.
4. Clean the evaporator and condenser coils:
- Use the vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to gently remove dirt, dust, and debris from the evaporator and condenser coils. Be careful not to damage the fins. If the coils are heavily soiled, consider using a specialized AC coil cleaner according to the manufacturer's instructions. Rinse the coils with a water hose if possible.
5. Clean the fins:
- Use a fin comb or fin straightener to carefully straighten any bent or crushed fins on the evaporator and condenser coils. This will help to maintain proper airflow.
6. Clean the drain pan:
- Remove the drain pan and clean it with water and mild detergent. Make sure it's free from mould and algae growth.
7. Clean the blower fan:
- Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to clean the blower fan and its housing. Wipe down the fan blades with a soft cloth. Make sure the fan spins freely without obstruction.
8. Check and clean the drain line:
- Inspect the drain line for clogs or algae buildup. If you find any, clear the blockage using a pipe cleaner or a mixture of water and vinegar.
9. Reassemble and test:
- Reassemble all the components, including the access panel. Turn the power back on and test your AC unit to ensure it's functioning properly.
10. Regular maintenance:
- To keep your AC unit in good condition, it's important to clean or replace the filter regularly (usually every 1-3 months), and perform basic cleaning and maintenance at least once a year.
If you're uncomfortable or unsure about cleaning your AC unit, it's best to consult a professional HVAC technician to ensure it's done correctly and safely. Regular maintenance can extend the life of your AC unit and improve its performance.
